Antarctica
A protective chain of MPAs encircling the continent
The Antarctica Programme launched in December 2016, following Lewis’s Ross Sea Swim and the successful establishment of the Ross Sea MPA.
We are part of the Antarctica 2030 coalition, which has an initial target of three more significant MPAs, in the Weddell Sea, the Antarctic Peninsula and East Antarctica.
Together with the Ross Sea MPA, these protected areas will span nearly 7 million square kilometres – over three times the size of Western Europe.
Headline swims under LPF’s Antarctica programme include:
- 2015: The Ross Sea Swim
- 2016: The Antarctic Peninsula Swim
- 2017: The South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Swim (Grytviken)
- 2020: East Antarctica Ice Sheet Swim
