Etienne Stott
From Gold to Green
After Etienne Stott won Olympic gold in canoe slalom in London in 2012, he channelled his competitive mindset into a new challenge: the fight against the Climate and Nature Crisis.
As a team GB Olympic gold medallist, Etienne Stott joined experts and researchers to condemn sponsorship deals with global car brands that pollute the environment, comparing them with early tobacco advertising campaigns. Since retiring in 2016, Etienne became a prominent member of Extinction Rebellion, undertaking actions of peaceful civil disobedience and being arrested on a number of occasions. Etienne remains resolute in advocating for non-violent direct action. “Sport has got this huge power to reach, connect and inspire people at a time when the planet is facing a grave crisis,” he says.
Etienne co-founded Champions for Earth with former rower and long-time campaigner Dave Hampton, to empower athletes to become environmental advocates. The organisation urges sports managers and organizers to implement systemic changes, arguing that safeguarding ecosystems is crucial for the future of sports, its fans, and participants. Etienne’s sporting achievements were recognised with an MBE in 2013. Learn more about Champions for Earth and stay updated by following Etienne on X.
