Dan Smale

Resistance and Resilience

How do marine ecosystems respond to human pressures? Dan is a ‘bucket and spade ecologist’ whose work with the Marine Biological Association of the UK focuses on how marine ecosystems weather the spread of invasive species, decreased coastal water quality, and climate change.

Over the past 15 years, he’s studied kelp forest ecologies in Australia, South America and Europe. He is currently looking at ‘carbon connectivity’ in both wild and farmed kelp populations with a view to maximising natural solutions to climate change mitigation. Find out more here.
