GLOBAL IMPACT
Simon describes himself as an ocean ecologist, passionate surfer, and amateur border collie handler. His love for the ocean was forged in his homeland New Zealand through surf sessions at dawn followed by afternoon fishing and SCUBA diving trips; his formal education included an undergraduate degree in Zoology from the University of Auckland and a PhD in Marine Biology from James Cook University, Australia.
Simon is now a Senior Scientist in the Biology Department at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, part of a group dedicated to “achieving a rigorous scientific basis for the conservation and sustainable management of fishes throughout the world’s oceans”. His colleagues hail from Australia, France, Portugal and the US, and their work extends from Cape Cod to Papua New Guinea, the Azores, the Red Sea, the central tropical Pacific Ocean and the Great Barrier Reef.
