A SAFER FUTURE
Growing up in northeast Florida, Megan was afraid of sharks – until a fisherman caught and dragged a shark onto the beach not far from where she and her sisters were swimming. When she realised that she had not been attacked, despite swimming very near a shark, her curiosity was roused.
Megan began to read all about sharks, and learned that they not only didn’t deserve their fearsome reputation, but were on the decline worldwide. Several decades and three academic degrees later, Megan is senior scientist at the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where she leads efforts to study the recovering great white shark population in the northwest Atlantic, and create a safer future for both sharks and humans. Her work provides scientific information critical for navigating the complex societal conflicts she believes will be the next major conservation challenge for sharks.
