MAPPING HAMMERHEADS
The conservation of shark and ray populations is at the heart of everything Fundación Mundo Azul (FUNMZ) does. Since 2015, the FUNMZ team has collected data on artisanal fishing landings along the Pacific coast of Guatemala.
The numbers showed a significant presence of neonate and juvenile hammerhead sharks, and participatory workshops with local fishers made it possible to identify nursery areas, particularly in Las Lisas and Sipacate. To deepen their understanding of these sites, the team implemented tagging and recapture activities for hammerhead sharks, and held further workshops to strengthen the technical capacities of fishers in those communities. This initiative seeks to precisely delineate the nursery areas and develop long-term management strategies for the conservation of the species.
