Gauchos Del Mar
Surfing (Way) Down South
Argentinian surfing brothers Julian and Joaquin Azulay were travelling from California back to their home in Buenos Aires hoping to find some fine waves along the way. They soon discovered that their commitment was morphing into something else.
“We noticed we had a dormant part of ourselves related to social, cultural and environmental issues.” Immersed in nature and in search of new cultures, the Gauchos del Mar (Cowboys of the Sea) began documenting their journey, communicating social and environmental messages. “We committed to surf the world, interacting with its different cultures, learning from them, and transmitting a simple and healthy way of living in harmony with nature.”
For the past 15 years, the Gauchos have done just that. Their projects have already helped conserve 500,000 hectares of land and sea in Peninsula Mitre at the south-eastern tip of the American continent, and their latest film Domain 1, shot in Antarctica, tells of their quest to surf the southernmost waves of the planet and to help promote the creation of a new marine protected area in the Antarctic Peninsula. “Antarctica is the only continent that belongs to humanity as a whole, and it’s our responsibility as inhabitants of this planet to take care of it.” Explore their films on their website or follow the Gauchos on Instagram, Facebook or X.
