Henley Mermaids
REVIVING RIVER SPACES
The Henley Mermaids channeled their love of open water swimming into a passionate campaign to raise awareness of the threats to our waterways. These four women form a cornerstone of grassroots river conservation in the UK, working tirelessly to see waterways restored, reconnected and revered.
Through charity swims and visiting local community groups, the Henley Mermaids exposed the scandal of sewage pollution in their beloved river. They regularly advise MPs on the truth about destructive practices, and have been catapulted into the national campaigning arena. Their hard work has already led to the Henley Town Council’s recent decision to fund two Fluidion testing monitors – the same as those used in the Paris Olympics – and year-round laboratory testing, to keep residents and visitors informed on water quality and give them a better understanding of the river’s health.
Their next goal is to reintroduce bathing to Henley; a dedicated area, complete with disabled access, is planned for Marsh Meadows in 2026. Stay up to date on their website and follow them on Bluesky or Instagram.
