Kevin Wekesa
Clean Green Game
Like all good environmentalists, Kenyan rugby sevens star Kevin Wekesa walks his talk. His Play Hard, Play Clean, Play Green initiative helps rugby contribute to environmental sustainability, community engagement, and green education, and he sets the example.
Kevin is tackling every aspect of his game to promote a circular economy, from reducing single-use plastic and putting recycling bins in stadiums, providing reusable water bottles to team members, promoting electric transport for teams, and sourcing sustainable sports kits. “An estimated 600,000 tonnes of sports kits end up on landfills,” Kevin says. Kevin knows what he’s talking about – he trained for the 2024 Olympics with boots donated to him by England Commonwealth silver medallist, Tom Varndell. “Many children playing rugby cannot afford to purchase kits, but can use pre-loved kits.”
Kevin offsets his travel emissions by planting fruit trees in schools – giving talks to the pupils about climate action and mitigation while he’s at it. He adopted a sustainable insect-protein based diet. “Cricket farming in Kenya is still in its infancy, but I come from a community where consuming insects is a daily occurrence. This helps keep my carbon footprint lower.” This player is proof that small things make a truly big difference. Follow Kevin on Instagram or Facebook and X.
