Laura Baldwin
Rebel for a Cause
In the world of Olympic sailing, few have charted a course quite like Laura Baldwin. This decorated athlete and two-time Olympic coach found herself navigating uncharted waters when she discovered the extent of the Climate Crisis in 2019.
Armed with her scientific background, community spirit, and maternal instinct, she set her sights on a different mission: local politics.
Laura secured a place on her town council’s climate action working group, and was elected to the Green Party’s executive campaigns committee. Recognising the urgency of the climate emergency, she turned to civil resistance, participating in direct actions with Extinction Rebellion and Ocean Rebellion.
Now, Laura has refocused her efforts on the world she knows best: sports. As a key member of Champions for Earth, she educates and inspires athletes to become environmental advocates. Her innovative ‘Sport Imaginarium’ workshops, developed with partner Etienne Stott, help sportspeople to harness the power of sport to better address environmental challenges.
Through her Sport LOCAL For Life campaign, Laura champions grassroots participation and local sustainability initiatives. She believes that sports can lead society towards a more sustainable future, addressing environmental, health, and social crises.
