SHARK CONSERVATION STRATEGIES

Not all shark conservation happens in the water. As Executive Director of the Shark Conservation Fund (SCF), Lee Crockett understands the thinking, planning, networking and negotiating that makes protection programmes possible.

Lee is responsible for the SCF’s programs, partnerships, operations, governance, and taking the organization to governments, NGOs, philanthropists, and the public. He brings to the task a master’s degree in biological oceanography and over 20 years experience in fisheries management with both the US Government and the nonprofit sector. Most recently, he was director of US Oceans for The Pew Charitable Trusts, where he led efforts to establish policies to end overfishing and promote ecosystem-based fisheries management. “Today, the plight of sharks mirrors the broader crisis facing our oceans,” Lee says. “Over a third of all shark species are threatened with extinction, with 428 species not documented for over a decade. Each year, more than 100 million sharks are killed – victims of industrial fishing, habitat destruction, and the insatiable demand for shark fins. Without immediate intervention, we risk losing these vital creatures forever, along with the ecosystems they anchor.”  Follow Lee on LinkedIn and visit the Shark Conservation Fund website.
