COLLABORATIVE FUTURES
“When I was a kid, I wanted to start a war to save sharks. Now that I’m older, I want to start a war for the men that fish them.”
Madison Stewart is Australian-born, sailboat-raised videographer who’s worldview was altered when she set out to document Indonesian fishing boats – and saw a solution rather than a problem. She created ‘Project Hiu’ (Hiu is the Indonesian word for shark) with the aim of protecting sharks through sustainable, community-driven alternatives to shark fishing in one of the world’s largest shark fisheries. Project Hiu is rooted in collaboration, education, and empowerment, offering fishing communities alternative sources of income through tourism and training so that shark fishermen can become guides, boat operators, and advocates for the ocean. Watch the video that envisions a future where both sharks and people can thrive together, and follow Madison and Project Hui on Instagram.
