DIVERSE OPPORTUNITIES
Women are doing it for themselves – and the sharks they love. Four scientists who shared a deep passion for misunderstood ocean creatures also believed that diversity in scientists leads to diversity in thought, and ultimately to innovation.
So they formed Minorities in Shark Sciences (MISS), a nonprofit advancing the field of shark, ray and other marine sciences by encouraging gender minorities of color to push through barriers and contribute their knowledge to the field. The result? A brighter, more diverse field for the future of shark science. Education is key, so MISS provides accessible and equitable pathways to marine biology through internships, fellowships, and research opportunities. The MISS team’s next mission is to tag pregnant female bull sharks in North Carolina to determine where they give birth, making sure that people and sharks coexist in a safe and sustainable way.
