A VOLUNTARY DIFFERENCE
If you don’t want to walk around with the ‘Baby Shark’ tune stuck in your head, best not to volunteer for Sharklab-Malta.
Since it started in 2008, Sharklab-Malta has been entirely run by volunteers to achieve its three main aims: research, education and raising awareness about elasmobranchs (sharks, rays, skates and chimaera) in Mediterranean waters. The small NGO offers hands-on intern experience for marine biology students to work on initiatives like their oviparous species rescue and release program, in which shark eggs are removed from dead sharks at the wholesale fish market, incubated, hatched and fed until they are large enough to survive independently. So far, 371 once-baby sharks have been returned to the sea. Other projects include ‘flying’ with bull rays, nursehound tagging, and over 8000 interactions with schools last year alone.
