TURNING THE PLASTIC TIDE
Sneha Shahi is a young environmentalist on a mission to protect the rivers of India and the communities that rely on them. Through her work with the Plastic Tide Turners campaign, Sneha mobilised volunteers to help restore the Bhukhi River.
Together they collected 700 kgs (and counting) of plastic and solid waste from just 800 metres of river, which led to an increase in sightings of native species in the area. Sneha has fought to increase awareness about freshwater ecosystems and conducted research on the anthropogenic stress to the Bhukhi river due to improper urban planning, bank encroachment and the release of untreated domestic sewage. Her current work involves bringing native biodiversity back to the Tamiraparani River through initiatives which aim to increase environmental awareness among youngsters and provide them with a platform for local stewardship.
