ADMIRATION TURNED ADVOCACY
It started with Hawaii Shark Encounters, one of the first businesses to bring the average non-scuba tourist closer to sharks in the wild, but after helping Hawaii become the first place in the world to ban the trade in shark fins, Stefanie dedicated herself to becoming one of the world’s loudest voices for shark protection.
She is founder and executive director of Shark Allies, and is a representative for Stop Finning EU, an advocacy group in Brussels. She also filmed and produced the documentary Extinction Soup about the perils of shark finning, “I believe saving sharks requires us to look for the most powerful combination of research, changes in governance and legislation, and ideas for advocacy,” she says.
