Surfers for Climate
Waves of Activism
At the intersection of surf culture and environmental activism, Surfers for Climate is making waves. Recognising that surfers need to find the right ‘take-off point’ for effective climate action, this Australian charity has developed a range of engaging programs to do just that.
Through creative events, community gatherings, and industry-focused initiatives, Surfers for Climate creates opportunities for some 2.5 million surfers to engage with climate issues in resonant ways. Initiatives like Wavechanger, which explores innovation and sustainability within the surf industry, and Blue Minds, which focuses on youth mental health, are designed to build a community ready and equipped to take meaningful action.
Some of their programmes have already yielded tangible results. The Line in the Sand Campaign advocates for banning new oil and gas exploration in Australian waters by 2028, supporting coastal communities in the renewable energy transition and strengthening marine protected areas. In March 2024, NSW Parliament passed legislation banning new offshore oil and gas exploration, a victory Surfers for Climate helped achieve through persistent campaigning and a petition with over 1700 responses. Now, they’re calling for the rest of Australia to follow suit and draw a line in the sand for our oceans. Check out their website to learn more and follow their Instagram for updates.
