CONSERVATION ON THE EDGE

As a marine conservation scientist specializing in shark and ray conservation, Trisha Gupta works with Indian fishing communities to understand their practices, traditional knowledge, and interactions with threatened marine species.

She aims to develop solutions that not only protect biodiversity but also support local livelihoods and align with global sustainable development goals. One of her projects focuses on the widenose guitarfish, a critically endangered shark-like ray, by exploring ways to incentivize local communities to participate in conservation efforts. She also works with the EDGE of Existence Programme — a global initiative committed to safeguarding Earth’s most unique and overlooked species, including sharks. “We support, strengthen, and diversify conservation leadership in low- and middle-income countries, building a foundation for locally-led, enduring conservation efforts,” Trisha says.
